Slithering Into S
Ashton Wells Rationale: This lesson design will help children recognize and identify /s/, the phoneme represented by S. Students will gain recognition of /s/ in spoken words by learning a meaningful gesture (hand movement like a slithering snake) and the letter symbol S. Students will work on identifying /s/ in words, and applying phoneme awareness with /s/ in phonetic cue reading by distinguishing between rhyming words. (Ex: presenting the child with the written word SAD and asking him if this says SAD or MAD?)
